Department Environmental and Public Health Engineering

The Department of Environmental and Public Health Engineering was founded in 1931, with the opening of the Athens School of Public Health, aimed to ensure a clean water supply and adequate sewerage system in residential areas for the prevention of epidemics of water borne diseases.

Today the Department is active in the field of Environmental Pollution and associated Public Health effects. It provides technical advice and recommendations based on the current knowledge and relevant environmental and public health regulations, and conducts studies aimed at environmental remediation.

The area of Environmental Engineering has expanded and developed internationally to encompass a broad range of issues such as the protection and conservation of water resources, the protection of ecosystems from toxic and hazardous substances, the treatment and reuse of waste water and the reuse and recycling of solid waste, all of which are directly linked to Public Health since over 90% of illnesses can be linked to environmental factors. In response to these areas of growing interest, the Department of Environmental and Public Health Engineering has introduced a Masters Course specializing in Environmental Health under the umbrella of the Occupational and Environmental Health Program in order to provide students with knowledge in the implementation of sustainable environment management policies through the planning, operation and control of infrastructure projects aimed at environmental remediation and the protection of public health.
